Morphology Classification. Gram Positive P. micra is a gram-positive bacterium, which indicates that a large composition of its cell wall is made up of a thick layer of peptidoglycan. P. micra has no flagella and is associated with biofilms in the subgingival dental plaque of the human oral cavity. P. micros is usually considered to be the predominant species of gram-positive anaerobic cocci in the oral micribiota and P. anaerobius and Finegoldia magna are also present in the oral cavity. Parvimonas micra is a fastidious, anaerobic, gram positive coccus, which is found in normal human oral and gastrointestinal flora. It has also been known as Peptostreptococcus micros and Micromonas micros with its most recent re-classification in 2006. It has been described in association with hematogenous seeding of prosthetic joints [1,2].

Clinical significance Most infections involving anaerobic cocci ar polymicrobial. Isolation in pure culture is rare. Gram stain Gram-stain: Negative = 0, Positive = 1, Indeterminate = 2: Found in human microbiome: Microbes that live anywhere in the human body and are not pathogenic to humans (i.e. capable of causing human disease) No = 0, Yes = 1: Plant pathogen: Does the species causes disease in plants? No = 0, Yes = 1: Animal pathogen: Does the species causes disease Tindall (2006) Parvimonas micra is a Gram positive anaerobic coccus which is frequently isolated from dental plaque in patients with chronic periodontitis.

Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) performs several functions in gram-positive bacteria, including maintenance of cationic homeostasis and modulation of autolytic activities. Parvimonas micra (Pm) has only been reported once before as the lone infecting organism of an orally originated, solitary brain abscess. Diagnosing brain abscesses caused by this Gram-positive anaerobic coccus, constituent of the oral cavity flora, is challenging, and an optimal treatment regimen has not been well established. Background Parvimonas micra, a Gram-positive anaerobic coccus, is a rare pathogen for psoas abscess.
